Yorba Linda Going High Tech - High Touch

December 28, 2007 by Sondra Marie

The Orange County Register interviewed our the new Mayor of Jim Winder. Jim has a tech theme for his Mayorship of Yorba Linda - The Land of Gracious Living.

What does this mean?
Jim says he “is ready to usher in a new wave of technology to the city of Yorba Linda”.

Does this help the residents of Yorba Linda?
It very possibly could. He has already implemented Webcasting of the City Council Meetings. Yorba Linda City Council Meetings Webcast

Quoted from OC Register article

Q:How does this movement toward high-tech benefit citizens and their quality of life?

A:People in Yorba Linda, like elsewhere, are very busy with a lot of things. This is a family community and they’ve got to get kids to and from school and help with homework and do all those kinds of things. Gas being what it is, the ability to sign up on a computer during a dead moment, instead of driving down to City Hall clearly contributes to positive things in people’s lives.

What the Yorba Linda City Council should do (along with every other city, county, state, etc…) is have their own blog so us technology hip people can subscribe to the blog and not have to visit the websites to get updates.

It looks like Jim might have some good ideas and goals for the City of Yorba Linda. Maybe Jim would leave a comment here or we will try to get our own interview with Jim to post here. so he can expand on his thoughts from the original OC Register article.

Yorba Linda City Council Meetings Webcast

December 28, 2007 by Sondra Marie

Starting with the December 18th 2007 City Council meeting, Yorba Linda - The Land of Gracious Living will start streaming their meetings on the internet and will also keep an archive of previous meetings that can be viewed at any time.

The meetings do not look to be streamed live but instead recorded and then put up for your viewing pleasure.

How many people watch the Yorba Linda City Council meetings? Probably a very small percentage of the residents, but maybe this will help more people watch them. I will make an effort to watch them because now I can do it on my own time.

I personally don’t think it’s a great implementation of the webcast but it is definitely a step in the write direction.

The Webcasts can be found here -> Yorba Linda City Council Webcast

Yorba Linda Bridge Room Shutdown - Catty Women or Prejudice?

December 19, 2007 by Sondra Marie

Bridge Players in Yorba Linda can’t play at the Community Center.

The Yorba Linda Seniors Citizens Club decided to shut down the games while they investigate a claim of discrimination lodged by one of the players.

Supposedly when the lady who lodged the complaint arrived to play bridge on Dec. 6, one of the Community Center coordinators refused to sit near her at the table and told other players the game would be “disbanded” if the other players included her. She says it’s because she’s Jewish.

Ruth Vaillancourt, president of the Yorba Linda Senior Citizens Club, said the coordinator instead said those who wanted to play alongside the complainer could do so, and those who did not could play on the other side of the room. “It has nothing to do with her being Jewish. It’s about her foul mouth,” Vaillancourt said. “I’ve talked to her a couple of times, and she’s been abusive to me. Nobody wants to play bridge with her. What can we do? … We need to cancel bridge while we get this settled.”

Sounds to me like it’s just some bitchy old woman that couldn’t get her way so she files a bogus complaint to ruin the fun for everyone else.

Yorba Linda Property Tax Increase

December 17, 2007 by Sondra Marie

Yorba Linda property owners will decided early 2008 whether to approve or deny a property tax increase for the upkeep of landscaping and streetlights along the Yorba Linda’s major streets.

The Measure asks property owners to nearly double the landscaping and lighting base on property tax bills from $47 annually to $91 annually.

In addition the City Council could raise that amount each year by the rate of inflation plus 3 percent. The clause allowing the 3 percent would return to voters after 10 years.

Only property owners will receive ballots. The votes will be weighted: Owners of large commercial parcels will have more weight than home owners.

The city will send out ballots for the all-mail election in January. So make sure you pay attention to what comes in the mail because if you don’t vote your opinion on this matter, then the votes of others will make your decision.

The proposal needs approval by a simple majority.
