Update 10:09
According to OCFA, fire started at 7:41, has been kept to under 10 acres, hand crews are keeping it from flaring up, no evacuations and so far no longer progressing. If it flairs up you’ll be notified. But looks like we’re going to be ok and it’s very good news. OCFA has done an amazing job! Thank you!

So.. we were saved by two dedicated helicopter pilots who 60 seconds later would have been going home and decided to help out. Did all of you know we DO NOT HAVE air cover in Yorba Linda 24/7 as do other cities? A very poor decision has been made by some in the OCFA , who decided it is ok for us to have 2 helicopters standing by 10 to 6 Monday to Friday, (one for 8 hours at the weekend) but of course woe betide us if a fire happens at any other time..
The difference it makes to a fire to have air cover doing those air drops immediately, – they can keep the fire in abeyance until ground cover arrives and of course in remote places that take a long time.
Come on OCFA – lets be like other cities – pleaseeeeeee, give my home a chance….
Lets face it – it appears to be not a money issue – just poor judgment…
As the first Fire Captain at old Station 32, I can attest to the ability of OCFA to handle firefighting.
Mike, there is no question that the OCFA does a magnificent job’ and
I totally believe in your ability to handle any kind of fire fighting, but, can you tell me that say for example, that a fire started in Santa Ana conditions in Chino state park, at around 10pm, that you, on the ground without anyone close by to carry out water drops, would be able to contain the fire as quickly, or as effectively, without the help of the helicopters, that are available, but not able to be used to their fullest capability?
