Attached are documents including a petition to change the Valley View name to Veterans Way and also to create a Festival of Patriots to expand upon the July 4th Celebrations. Below is wording from both of the documents.
Festival of Patriots:
From the early days of our city, a Fiesta Days event was held each Spring. This is no longer the case because of budgets issues. It was privately operated with the full support of the city and its leaders.
Recently, this popular annual event was abandoned for a variety of reasons, the least of them being a lack of interest on the part of residents. Many local organizations counted on this event as a way to raise needed funds for their continuing operations. Many have indicated an interest in asking the city for funds to support their operations. This is not a very desirable approach when alternatives are potentially available. The City annually sponsors a 4th of July fireworks display this way nearly cancelled this year due to city budget issues!
A proposal has been made to the City Council to establish a combined and expanded “FESTIVAL of PATRIOTS — 4th of JULY CELEBRATION” to honor our VETERANS AND THOSE THAT SUPPORT THEM. Many individuals and organizations have been spoken with regarding this proposal and establishment of the festival and the LEAGUE of PATRIOTS (a not for profit/non-partisan organization) who supporters would be citizens, business and organization within Yorba Linda).
The league’s mission would be fund raising for and operation of this festival, Memorial Day and other Veteran appreciation events. There are many who are enthusiastic about moving forward and bringing this project to fruition
for a variety of reasons, therefore, it appears to have broad community support. Many (both citizens/businesses) have indicated a desire to help fund the cost of the proposal in anticipation of a positive response from the City Council. Therefore, we the undersigned residents of Yorba Linda urge the Council to support this proposal and take appropriate actions to implement it as soon as possible. If the Council does not grant the wishes of those citizens who have signed this petition and is supported many others one possible course of action would be to put the issue on the ballot.
Change Street Name
A proposal has been made to the Yorba Linda City Council that the name of Valley View Avenue (location of the Veterans Memorial) between Imperial Highway and Yorba Linda Boulevard be changed to “VETERANS WAY” in honor of all veterans, both living and dead and that appropriate signage be installed.
An alternate proposal to simply install additional signs to the existing street name holders is much less desirable. We prefer the initial proposal “VETERANS WAY” rather than the latter.
Therefore, we the undersigned business/residents of Valley View Avenue, adjacent streets and other areas of our city request the Yorba City Council to make the change requested. Many of us have pledged to help pay for the change ($9, 205.16) if the Council approves the request if they do not one possible course of action is to put this issue on the ballot.

I say we bring back Fiesta Days. It is tradition.
As for rolling that festivity into some militaryesque parade organization called ‘Festival of Patriots’? No thank you. I mean I love this country. But that is insane. We are not a military city. Thank goodness.
As for spending $9,000+ on street signs? I think that is ridiculous and irresponsible. Sure ‘privately funded’. But why not donate it to our school system? They are struggling to pay for PAPER this year. Hey how about the $9,000 is used to send care packages to the actual men and women in the military??? Changing perfectly good street signs is silly. I assure you no dead veteran will be any happier about giving their life for their country just because some silly street in YL has the name “Veterans Way”.
Unfortunately, I have to agree with GLA on the street renaming. The park’s name has already been changed and we have a very nice memorial honoring our veterans. Sadly, we have to add a couple more names to the memorial. I think that there are much more important things to do with the money than re-name a street. This community honors our veterans at every opportunity it can, and I think that it is great.
As fo rthe July 4th celebration, I really don’t care what you call it as long as it continues. It is one of the best activity/event YL has. I’m not sure about the name “Festival of Patriots”, but if you want to roll in a celebration of our current and ex military personnel with the Fourth, then go ahead, I thought that we somewhat do that now.
Oh, and I thought that Fiesta Days were held in the fall. At least that was when the parade was.
I agree with GLA and Mr. Fischle.
Furthermore: I think this is not well thought out and seems to be busy work for anyone who has little else to concentrate on. Instead, lets put our efforts toward solving REAL problems. You don’t need to look far afield to find many.
