Yorba Linda, CA – Mayor Mark Schwing has asked both Yorba Linda residents and organizations for nominations in the City’s 2009 Citizen of the Year campaign. “We’re appealing to service groups, schools, places of worship, sports leagues, charitable organizations, and individual citizens for help in finding good candidates for this important recognition,” Schwing said. “We’re seeking that special youth coach who has had a significant impact on kid’s lives, or the PTA volunteer who contributes to the success of their school, or the long-time Girl Scout or Boy Scout leader who does more than just guide a troop, or the person who raises a lot of money for charitable causes.”

The Citizen of the Year award recognizes extraordinary individual dedication and commitment to volunteerism and the community. Schwing noted the old saying that “ten percent of the people do eighty percent of the volunteer work” in a solicitation letter that was mailed out earlier this month. A nomination form included with the letter encourages people to identify community leaders and provide background information about them. These nomination forms are also available at all City facilities and on the City’s website at (www.ci.yorba-linda.ca.us).

The nomination forms are due back to the City by October 23, 2009. At that time, a special Blue Ribbon Committee, made up of Schwing and one member from each of the City’s four commissions, will evaluate the nominees and select a final Citizen of the Year. This person will then be honored at a City Council Meeting in November.

“Each member of the City Council believes in the importance of recognizing the valuable contributions that so many people make to our community,” Schwing observed. “It’s all about character and setting a good example for others to follow. We’re fortunate that there are so many people who give of their time and talent on a daily basis in Yorba Linda.”
